Sakana Gallery presents Alex Bloc’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. With Rivage, the artist presents a new body of work inspired by the coastline between Biarritz and San Sebastián, where lines, reliefs and optical phenomena translate the rhythms, tensions and movements of the landscape.

Inspired by the coastline between Biarritz and San Sebastián, Rivage explores the perceptual structures of the shore. Horizons, cliffs, waves, mineral strata, and shifting light. Through a geometric and optical vocabulary, Alex Bloc translates these elements into vibrating lines, grids, and reliefs. Rather than depicting the landscape, the works convey its rhythms, tensions, and movements. The shoreline thus becomes a space of transition, between stability and disappearance, geometric order and natural forces.

The exhibition brings together twenty-five works. First, four large acrylic canvases on cotton stretchers, Onde, Flysch and Reflections at 190 × 190 cm and Strates at 114 × 150 cm, where fine white and blue lines on a dark ground unfold in concentric arcs, in diagonals or in shifted blocks like strata. Then eight works on paper under fluted glass, from Rochers to Ondulations, where the ribbed glass sets the pattern moving as the eye passes over it. Two paper cut-outs, Vibrations 1 and Vibrations 2, where the diagonal bands take on relief. Eight Indian ink drawings from the Blurred Lines series, fine vertical lines in a single colour whose moiré opens lighter and darker zones. Finally, three acrylics on paper from the Rayures Vibratoires series, broad vertical navy stripes laid over a sprayed gradient.

Born in Strasbourg, Alex Bloc (Alex Bloch) has spent over twenty years exploring geometry as a language of perception. Heir to optical and constructivist art, he creates poetic architectures where line, light, and matter interact. His works, poised between precision and fragility, transform flat surfaces into reliefs or optical illusions, inviting a contemplative experience. Through his site-specific interventions, he celebrates impermanence, transition, and the subtle vibration of the world.

Alex Bloc has been exhibiting on the Basque coast since 2012, first in Guéthary, then in Bayonne, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz, where he showed “Rayure Vibratoires” at the Atabal in 2023 and “Blue Carbon” at the SurfRider Campus in 2024. His exhibition record opens in 2005 in Strasbourg and runs through Paris, Marrakech, Berlin, Saarbrücken, London, Manchester, Portland, San Francisco, Miami (Art Basel, 2011), Moscow and Cape Town. In 2026 he exhibited at Larock Granoff in Paris, in “Dialogue avec Monet” and at the “Salon du dessin”.

An exhibition catalogue, in an edition of 300, accompanies Rivage. It gathers the biography and the exhibition text in four languages, the labels of the twenty-five works and the list of exhibitions from 2005 to 2026. High-resolution images are available on request.
