Joël Dagès – Dye artist, plant dye & shibori
Joël Dagès is a dye artist. After thirty years in fashion and art education in Paris, he returned in 2019 to Narrosse, to the family farm in the Landes region, to devote himself fully to his artistic practice.
His dyes are conceived as paintings. On white fabric, through successive baths, colours fix and blend, giving rise to vibrant movements. Through shibori, a Japanese technique of folding and tying fabric, he creates reserve zones: spaces denied to colour, whites that persist at the heart of the indigo.
All pigments used are plant-based and ecological, the dyeing techniques are ancestral, and the fabrics are second-hand.
The exhibition "Urdinaren Formak — The Forms of Blue" at Sakana Gallery (Donostia-San Sebastián) unfolds a series of canvases where placeless landscapes appear. Indigo dominates, deep, almost marine.
